The new initiative, Community Energy Catalyst, will support local communities to build their own clean energy infrastructure or secure stakes in larger regional renewable energy schemes. Fair Play Clean Energy, Thrive’s existing joint venture with Top Cashback Sustainability Ltd, will provide £20 million of the investment, with Better Society Capital providing matched funding.
Community Energy Catalyst will make investments ranging between £0.5 million to £30 million in individual projects which are at least 1MW in size and employ proven technologies such as onshore and offshore wind, solar PV and hydro-electric. The joint venture will target late-stage development projects that have already secured planning consent, enabling them to advance through to construction, commissioning and operation while aligning with local objectives.
As well as funding, Thrive brings 30 years of experience financing, building and operating clean energy projects in the UK, and will provide support to community energy groups during key milestones such as procurement and grid connection.
When we created our award-winning community funding bridge in 2017, it was the first of its kind. Eight years later we’ve invested over £21 million into seven community energy projects, including £4 million to build England’s largest onshore wind turbine, which is 100% owned by the community in our home city of Bristol.

<h3>What&#8217;s changed?</h3>
As part of the statement, Mr Hunt introduced the ‘Electricity Generator Levy’, a temporary 45% tax that will be levied on revenues to capture the ‘extraordinary returns from low-carbon UK electricity generation’, starting in January 2023 and remaining in place for the next five years.
While the full details of the levy and how it will apply is still emerging, we are not concerned about Thrive’s ability to continue funding, building and operating clean energy projects. We can, however, see how it will frustrate growth across the renewables sector, especially when renewable energy generators are paying disproportionately more than all other types of electricity generation and oil and gas companies.
With many households feeling the effects of rising wholesale gas prices – a result, in the most part, of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent reduction of gas supplies to Europe – oil and gas companies have been subject to a windfall tax since May. This means that they have had to pay an additional 25% tax on their profits but including an 80% investment allowance. The government has now increased this to 35% and an investment allowance remains.
<h3>What does this mean for development?</h3>
As a business that funds, builds and operates renewable energy projects across the UK, we’re happy to part of a collective effort to alleviate the pressure for households that are struggling to pay their bills.
However, we are concerned that the government’s approach will incentivise investment in fossil fuels – something that is not compatible with achieving net zero, or tackling the climate emergency, especially when our reliance on fossil fuels is what has caused this energy crisis in the first place. It’s frustrating to see that the renewables sector is being asked to pay a 45% levy on revenue, with no incentive for investment, while oil and gas businesses are having to pay an additional 35% tax on profit, with a 29% investment allowance. This means renewables will effectively be subsidising fossil fuels, which feels like an own goal on the journey to net zero.
While we recognise that we must work together to support with energy bills in the short-term, we need to re-think how the UK’s electricity market is structured if we’re to avoid price shocks in future. This would mean moving to a capacity-priced system rather than the marginal-priced system that we have in place today. In doing so, we believe the impact of the current gas price crisis would be materially reduced and consumers could directly benefit from the lower prices that renewables bring. This would also perhaps increase public backing and further accelerate the transition to a renewables based grid.
<h3>It&#8217;s not all bad news</h3>
With energy bills now doubling for many households, the government has renewed its focus on building the UK’s energy security, which will supposedly be delivered through major investment in clean technologies – notably offshore wind, carbon capture and storage – and greater energy efficiency.
From what we can see, smaller developers and in particular community energy groups will be exempt from the levy due to their size. This means that we can continue providing these organisations with the funding, speed, certainty, and skills to get new renewable projects built. It’s critical that communities are put at the heart of the clean energy transition, so we’re keen to support as many communities as possible in taking ownership of their energy supply in a way that keeps profits and green opportunities local.

Autumn Statement: We welcome the opportunity to help UK households with their energy bills

The same report found that if we redirected the annual $570 billion spent on ramping up fossil fuel production worldwide, we could more than compensate for the $450bn shortfall in solar and wind investment required to meet global climate goals.
With gas prices soaring and consumers struggling to pay their bills, there is no doubt that COP is more relevant than ever this year. The huge economic problems countries are currently experiencing are driven by their reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels. Sustainable economic recovery and managing climate change are two sides of the same coin.
Ahead of COP, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) commissioned an independent review of the government’s approach to delivering net zero, with a focus on ensuring it’s done in a way that is ‘pro-business’ and ‘pro-growth’. We believe that delivering net zero is inherently pro-business and pro-growth, as the UK takes this opportunity to create a better, fairer world based on abundant natural resources.
As a business that is actively funding and building clean energy projects in the UK, it’s important that we’re part of these conversations and that the government understands how it can support investment across the renewables mix moving forwards. Below, we highlight the key areas which we believe will accelerate net zero, lower bills and create new green jobs.
<h2>What we want from the net zero review</h2>
<h3>1. Sustainable growth is born from net zero</h3>
We want the government to acknowledge the economic benefits that come from our transition to a renewables-based energy system.
Net zero provides a massive opportunity for the UK to have a positive impact for all via energy cost savings and investment in long-term, clean energy infrastructure. It will create not just new jobs but new green career paths, as well as the homegrown energy sources the country so badly needs for both energy security and economic prosperity. It also has the potential to create a new industry as the UK can export its net zero services, products, and investment overseas.
Our offshore wind industry leads the world and is therefore presenting opportunities for other UK businesses to get involved with the supply chain. Onshore wind and solar, carefully sited and embedded in communities, have the potential to do the same.
The UK’s legally binding net zero targets present an opportunity for us to fulfil our mission to power the transition to a sustainable energy future by helping people meaningfully connect with clean energy projects. We believe these targets are the catalyst the country needs to underpin economic growth, promote energy independence and tackle the energy crisis, which is driven by our reliance on volatile, expensive fossil fuels like gas.
<h3>2. A more favourable approach to onshore wind</h3>
As one of the cheapest and quickest technologies to deploy, we have a ready-to-go solution that is not being fully utilised. An effective ban on onshore wind in England – introduced in 2015 – has led to a significant slowdown in the number of new projects being deployed. Moving forwards, we hope that the additional planning barriers will be reversed so that onshore wind is treated in line with other infrastructure projects when it comes to planning, allowing us to crack on with building projects that deliver savings back to consumers.
Facilitating the repowering of existing onshore wind turbines would also be a material win in terms of unlocking the potential of onshore wind. Repowering has the potential to increase UK generation significantly, as more modern machines can deliver much more electricity per site compared to older models. For example, we repowered our Caton Moor wind farm in 2006, replacing the existing 10 turbines with 8 more advanced machines. With two fewer turbines and only a small increase in the size of each, output from the site was increased seven-fold.
Most renewable generation equipment requires re-powering 20 or 30 years after commissioning. As the UK’s fleet matures, it is crucial to remove uncertainty from the planning process so that we can plan and deliver repowering in a cost-effective way.
<h3>3. Electricity storage can help maintain energy security while also accelerating net zero</h3>
We think the value of storage solutions should be recognised, not only in accelerating net zero, but in the avoided costs of transmission and distribution infrastructure. To reap the rewards of long-term sustainable storage – including aggregated BESS, pumped hydro storage and emerging storage technologies – we need clear, long term price signals that encourage investment and therefore delivery. With greater clarity, we can flatten demand, reduce the amount of capacity, distribution and transmission infrastructure, and therefore ultimately lower the cost of electricity for everyone.
<h3>Post Cop27 and beyond</h3>
It’s great to see the government acknowledging the role renewables have to play, not only in delivering net zero but in lowering energy costs for consumers. While this is positive, the most important thing the government could do to accelerate our transition is to provide a more supportive, stable policy environment. This would allow the renewables sector to make long-term investment decisions with confidence, accelerating and lowering the cost of delivering the fleet of renewables required for a clean, sustainable future.
It is also essential that businesses, communities and individuals are given the tools to become more self-sufficient in energy. This means moving from the old model, where large power stations fed passive consumers, to renewable electricity and heat generation, combined with time of use incentives and improved energy efficiency, that support smart, local grids.
Delivering on net zero by 2050 and ending the energy crisis go hand in hand. Only by building new clean energy and storage projects can we secure a long-term, low cost, reliable electricity supply for the UK. This is, of course, also the route to net zero. What we need from our government is certainty – it’s time for smart, sustainable policies that deliver value as part of a just transition.

Every day, CSE’s energy advisors talk to people that are scared and in desperate need of help. They tackle the root causes of fuel poverty – cold homes, low incomes and high energy bills – and support thousands of households each year.
With more and more people calling in, CSE’s telephone advice line is experiencing a four-fold increase in demand. The Share the Warmth appeal will support this vital service and donations will be used where they are needed most to help people in fuel poverty.
<a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/research/fuel-poverty-uk/">Data from the University of York</a> has found that more than three-quarters of households in the UK, or 53 million people, will have been pushed into fuel poverty by January 2023. People living in the poorest and coldest regions of the UK will be the worst affected along with those who are already most likely to be struggling with the cost of living.

As soaring gas prices cause millions to face fuel poverty, we’re helping CSE to provide a much-needed lifeline to homes up and down the UK.

It’s safe to say that this year’s show felt more pertinent than ever, especially given the number of households struggling with their energy bills as a result of the UK’s dependence on dirty and expensive fossil fuels. After three days of insight sharing and relationship building, we’ve come away feeling optimistic about what can be achieved if we pull together and prioritise the deployment of new, cost-effective renewable projects. Below we share our key takeaways from the show.
<h3>1. Businesses should investigate on-site renewables to accelerate net zero</h3>
Data from the British Business Bank found that smaller businesses account for half of UK business-driven emissions, the same proportion as larger businesses. At the same time, they’re also less likely to have the capital and skills required to make the scale of changes needed for net zero. In her panel session, our investment director Monika shared her thoughts on how the industry can better support businesses when it comes to reducing their carbon emissions.
This includes installing their own renewable energy project – for example a wind turbine or rooftop solar array – on their commercial premises. Also known as a ‘direct wire’ arrangement, it means that the business can directly benefit from the clean electricity it generates.
What are the advantages to this? As we’re seeing currently, both consumers and businesses can be exposed to drastic changes in the supply and demand for fossil fuels. On-site renewables therefore offer a solution to managing energy costs in an increasingly volatile marketplace, giving businesses the opportunity to secure long-term, consistent energy prices which are typically cheaper than connecting to the grid. With this in mind, we expect to see a surge in the number of businesses looking to develop their own renewable projects as a way to tackle soaring bills at the same as improve their environmental footprint.
<h3>2. We need to invest in the green workforce of the future</h3>
A feeling amongst many attendees was that the renewables industry is facing an unprecedented skills shortage, especially when it comes to recruiting young talent. From engineers and installers through to designers and IT technicians, we must prioritise education and create opportunities so that the next generation feel empowered to take their place in the evolving green economy.
At Thrive, we hold annual open days and encourage communities to come along and find out more about renewable energy, how it’s helping lower household bills and why it’s fundamental to meeting the UK’s net zero ambitions. In September, we saw 500 people descend on our wind farm in Bristol and it was great to speak to some budding engineers of the future about how the turbines work and their role in tackling the climate crisis. We also run an internship programme which aims to give university students useful insight into the renewables industry so that they can go on to thrive in   green careers.
<h3>3. Build and resilient and sustainable supply chains</h3>
There was also a lot of discussion about supply chains and the need for sustainable procurement, including a very insightful panel session led by Chris Hewett from Solar Energy UK. Chris talked about the company’s Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) which it has recently launched with SolarPower Europe. The initiative is being designed to further develop supply chain transparency and strengthen confidence in how, where, and by whom products and solar components are manufactured.
At Thrive, we pay very close attention to our supply chain and collect information and data to improve our decision making and evaluate our suppliers. The global supply chain for solar panels and batteries is a particular focus for us as we continue diversifying our portfolio. We have been working with suppliers and external experts to identify panel manufacturers who, to the best of our knowledge, are not operating in the areas implicated in modern slavery allegations.
We have also commissioned third party experts to review the provenance of rare earth minerals used in the manufacturing of batteries and the human rights practices in their extraction. Our procurement includes environmental, social and governance criteria upon which tenders are evaluated. By incorporating these ethical and environmental criteria into our procurement processes, we hope that suppliers will see the value in improving their practices.

We joined over 10,000 people at Solar & Storage Live – And here's what we learnt

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in our recent share offer. Because of you, we’ve been able to raise £6.8 million to deliver new renewable energy generation and storage projects across the UK.
The offer, which was promoted by Triodos Bank UK via its crowdfunding platform, has now closed after we reached our original £5 million target ahead of deadline. In September, we extended the offer so that more people had the opportunity to participate, with over 1,200 investments made in total.
Now we’re focusing on action and will be using the funding to fuel our next stage of growth, helping to expand our portfolio of clean electricity projects and creating value across the electricity system as we aim to decarbonise by 2035.
As well as funding new onshore wind and commercial solar projects, we intend to increase our battery storage and baseload capacity and the collaborative funding available for community energy groups to build their own renewable energy projects.

The success of the crowdfund follows new survey data – commissioned by Thrive and undertaken by Opinium – which revealed that retail investors are deeply concerned about the climate and energy crisis and want to take matters into their own hands by investing in renewables.
According to the survey, which gathered data from 1,000 UK retail investors alongside 2,000 people from the general population, seven in 10 investors (69%) think we should increase the amount the UK invests in renewable energy.
When it comes to motivation, 8 in 10 investors (81%) say they are concerned about the long-term implications of the energy crisis, with many (57%) wanting to use their investing power to help bring down energy costs for all. As a result, nearly six in 10 investors (57%) have recently, or plan to, increase their investments in renewables. This attitude is shared by the UK population, with two-thirds (66%) wanting investment in renewables to increase.

Investing in the shares of an unlisted company involves risk – including potential for loss of capital – as the value of shares may go down as well as up. The payment of dividends and the target return on equity are not guaranteed.
Thrive shares are transferable but are not listed on any investment exchange, they can be traded through monthly share auctions. It may be difficult to sell shares at a price investors wish to sell them for and the shares may take time to sell.

At a time when the shift to renewables is more urgent than ever, we’ll be using the money raised to build some of our pipeline of onshore wind, commercial rooftop solar and battery assets.

We've raised £6.8 million to fund new clean energy projects in the UK

Through our community benefit programme, we’re pleased to be able to support another ten shared buildings – located within 20 miles of one of our clean energy projects – with grants totalling over £30,000. With support from national energy charity, Centre for Sustainable Energy, up to £4,000 has been awarded to each of these community organisations so that they can make sustainability and energy efficiency improvements ahead of winter, including roof, window and wall insulation, double glazing and LED lighting.
With this latest round included, we have awarded 51 grants to 43 buildings since 2016, totalling over £150,000. These improvements save over 75 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

During challenging times, community buildings can offer a warm, safe place for people to come together and socialise. Thrive is offering grants to shared buildings close to our clean energy sites to improve energy efficiency and lower bills.

Helping community buildings become a warm hub this winter

Put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was brilliant to be able to meet lots of new and engaged faces to our four-turbine site in Avonmouth. Attendees had an opportunity to peep inside one of the 2MW operational turbines on site, as well as enjoy a range of other wind-related activities for the whole family including Explorer Dome’s climate change show, face painting and more. The Centre for Sustainable Energy were also on hand to provide advice on energy efficiency.
Coinciding with the start of Great Big Green Week – a national initiative led by the Climate Coalition to celebrate community action in fighting the climate crisis – we wanted to continue the conversation about climate change and how onshore wind projects are part of the solution. We were thrilled by the enthusiasm shown for the turbines and the number of insightful questions asked – with lots coming from well informed budding engineers of the future!
A massive thank you to everyone that joined us, from our excited guests to the exhibitors who helped make it such a valuable event for the community.

As part of Great Big Green Week, we invited the wider Bristol community to join us at our Avonmouth wind farm to learn more about onshore wind and its role in tackling the climate emergency.

The project will also see the site’s biodiversity increase by more than 40%, a £40,000 fund for local community-led, sustainable projects created and over £1m spent on services and contracts in the local area.
Thrive has already provided funding to the UK’s first deep geothermal power plant, which is construction at United Downs, near Redruth.
Similarly to United Downs, the second site at Penhallow will be made up of two deep wells. The first will reach approximately 4,500 metres deep and will bring the naturally heated water to the surface, whilst the second well will be around 3,000 metres deep and will be used to return the cooled fluid back under ground after it has been used to produce electricity and heat. Construction works are expected to start next year, with generation estimated to start in 2026 – delivering circa 42,000 MWh of baseload renewable electricity per year, enough to power around 11,000 UK homes and save 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, according to GEL.

The new polling, undertaken by Opinium Research, surveyed 1,000 UK retail investors alongside 2,000 people from the general population. The findings show that seven in 10 investors (69%) think we should increase the amount the UK invests in renewable energy, despite the position of the new Prime Minister, who has indicated that she will restrict development in renewables.
Specifically, 65% of retail investors support more solar energy projects in the UK, which rises to 78% of seasoned investors that have been investing for 10 years or more. Meanwhile, 62% support more onshore wind projects (rising to 72% of experienced investors).
<h3>Future thinking investors funding renewables themselves</h3>
8 in 10 investors (81%) say they are concerned about the long-term implications of the energy crisis, with many (57%) wanting to use their investing power to help bring down energy costs for all. Over half (56%) say that, as an investor, they feel a responsibility to use their investments to help the UK achieve its net-zero carbon goals.
Prompted by this desire for positive change in the energy sector, nearly six in 10 investors (57%) have recently, or plan to, increase their investments in renewables. This attitude, in support of investing in renewable energy, is shared by the UK population as a whole, with two-thirds (66%) wanting investment in renewables to increase.
<h3>Thrive&#8217;s crowdfunding campaign reaches £5 million</h3>
Our current share offer provides further proof of public support for investing in renewables. We have now raised more than £5 million from over 1,000 investors to fund new renewable energy generation and storage projects across the UK. We are aiming to raise a total of £7 million. The offer is promoted by Triodos Bank UK through its crowdfunding platform (<a href="https://www.triodoscrowdfunding.co.uk/invest/thrive-renewables-plc-2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">find out more here</a>) with a minimum investment of £94 (40 shares). As with all investments, returns are not guaranteed, and investors may not get back all, or any, of their original investment.

A 38% increase on the same period last year, our clean energy projects generated 73,625 MWh of clean electricity<a class="js-scroll-done" href="/latest-news/news/thrive-s-2022-half-year-results-reveal-increase-in-generation/#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1">[1]</a> – enough to power the equivalent of almost 40,000 average UK homes<a class="js-scroll-done" href="/latest-news/news/thrive-s-2022-half-year-results-reveal-increase-in-generation/#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2">[2]</a> – and delivered emissions reductions equivalent to 32,653 tonnes of CO2 during January to June 2022.
Half year operating profits were £3.4m on a turnover of £8.4m, with shareholders receiving a final dividend of 7p per share for 2021, which was paid in July 2022.

Good progress has been made with our diversification strategy, which includes the construction of three commercial solar rooftop sites as part of our work with Olympus Power. We’ve also begun works on our 20MW battery storage site at Feeder Road in Bristol, with the project expected to be connected to the grid later this year.
In April, we finalised our investment in Ambition Community Energy, with our unique collaborative funding model helping to get England’s biggest onshore wind turbine into construction after years of planning work. With a capacity of 4.2MW, the turbine will be capable of generating enough power for close to 3,000 homes – the equivalent of Lawrence Weston’s domestic use. The project will also save almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifetime. Groundwork is now underway, and commissioning is expected in Spring next year.

Our mission to decarbonise the energy system and tackle climate change also saw us named as a Best for the World B Corp for the second year running, putting us in the top 5% of global B Corps for our positive impact on the environment, and highly commended for financial leadership at the British Renewable Energy Awards.

Thrive's 2022 half year results reveal increase in generation

Take a tour of the site, peek into the base of a turbine with one of Thrive’s experts, watch the lively, interactive climate change show by <a href="http://www.explorerdome.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Explorer Dome</a> and enjoy lots of other wind-related activities for kids, from arts and crafts to face painting and more. This will be Thrive’s first open day since 2019, after putting the event on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions. Some transport will be provided from the city centre and Lawrence Weston.

A battery energy storage system (BESS) charges itself by taking energy from the grid or power plant e.g., a solar array and then discharging that energy later when needed. As we move towards a more renewables-based energy system, battery storage is becoming more critical. This is because it helps provide greater flexibility, enabling higher levels of renewable energy to be integrated onto the grid – i.e. storing energy when it’s really windy, for example, and releasing it when demand peaks.
Power from smaller MW batteries like our Feeder Road site can be combined (aggregated) so that they provide a larger storage resource. This is where software platforms, such as those provided by Flexitricity, become incredibly important as they help provide oversight of multiple batteries, ensuring that they work together to match the consumption demand of our towns and cities.

Flexitricity pioneered the demand side response industry in Great Britain thirteen years ago and has added a host of grid scale and behind-the-meter battery storage projects to its ‘virtual power plant’ platform which aggregates multiple sites benefiting customers as well as the national energy system. Flexitricity has a contracted virtual power plant of over 800MW and this agreement pushes the contracted portfolio of batteries to over 330MW.

The agreement will allow the lithium-ion BESS site to be monitored and dynamically optimised from Flexitricity’s 24/7 control room in Edinburgh.

Thrive joins forces with aggregator, Flexitricity, on 20MW battery project in Bristol

Local residents have been offered a stake in the project through shared ownership with Bristol Energy Cooperative. Thrive is the first commercial owner in the UK to offer shared ownership in a standalone battery project.
The visit kicked off with a short explanation of how battery storage projects work to support our everyday electricity needs – storing electricity when generation is abundant and exporting it back to the grid at times of peak usage.
Next, it was straight onto the treasure trail, where the children were given a range of items to find in the nature area on site, like bird boxes, insect boxes and flowers. It was great to see the children spotting a whole range of other different plants and insects too, from caterpillars and birds to bees and butterflies.
Thrive has introduced a number of biodiversity measures to protect and enhance nature on site. This includes installing bird, bat and invertebrate boxes, as well as planting trees, hedgerows, species rich grassland, shade scrub and native ferns to strengthen local habitat corridors and provide wildlife with food, nectar and pollen.
Alongside the treasure hunt, there was a nature themed craft activity where the pupils worked together to decorate a large cardboard butterfly with colourful tissue paper. The butterfly canvas was repurposed from an old Thrive exhibition stand.

Olivia Eijking and Robin Redfern both bring to the team extensive experience of leading and innovating developments in the energy industry. Their expertise will help grow our impact as we aim to double generation capacity in the next five years.
Olivia has nearly 30 years of experience in the energy markets, working across trading, investment management, private equity and project development. She has held a number of leadership positions, including partner &amp; COO for Global Advisors, one of the first energy &amp; metals focused hedge funds, CFO for Massena Capital Partners Private Equity during its substantial expansion, and co-founder &amp; co-managing director of Ferrostaal Capital, the renewable energy venture of the German industrial services group.
As an entrepreneur, Olivia launched Kreen &amp; WeBridge, the wind, solar and storage focused renewable energy consultancy and green tech platform that advises manufacturers, project developers and sponsors in the financing and development of renewables projects. Over the course of her career, Olivia has been directly involved in 5.5 GW’s worth of renewable energy projects as well as the oversight of over EUR 1.2 b in energy asset investments in Europe.

Robin is a mechanical engineer and has worked across a wide range of renewable energy technologies since 2009. Alongside his role at Thrive, Robin is a partner in Everoze, a leading technical consultancy in onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, battery storage and wider energy flexibility. Robin is also currently representing Everoze on the board of Skyray, a company set up to provide engineering services to solar PV and storage. Throughout his career, Robin has always sought to span the gap between practical engineering realities and desk-based theory and market forces, regularly visiting and inspecting projects whilst also providing due diligence and other advice to investors and lenders at a bigger picture level.

Robin and Olivia’s leadership and passion will complement the existing Board of three Executive Directors and five Non-Executive Directors. Colin Morgan has stepped down as Non-Executive Director, having made an invaluable contribution to Thrive over the past decade since joining the Board in 2013.

Thrive appoints Olivia Eijking and Robin Redfern as Non-Executive Directors

Community spaces provide a friendly meeting place for local people but are often cold, draughty and expensive to heat. It’s important to help the volunteers who manage these social hubs take practical measures to improve energy efficiency, so that they can reduce costs and keep them warm throughout the winter.  
Community buildings located within a 20 mile radius of one of Thrive’s clean energy projects can apply for grants of up to £4,500 to make energy efficiency improvements. Applicants will be asked to complete a full energy survey of the shared building using guidance supplied by CSE. This will help to identify potential improvements, including zero-cost measures, and calculate carbon and cost savings for different options. Now in the eighth round of funding, the programme has awarded 61 grants to 53 community buildings, totalling over £190,000. These improvements save over 85 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.  
In 2023, grants were awarded to ten community buildings across the UK, including Debenham Shed located near Eye Wind Farm in Suffolk. Debenham Shed aims to improve mental health for retired men and women who may otherwise struggle with loneliness or isolation, by providing workshop facilities with tools and materials for people to connect, converse and create. They used the grant to improve heating and insulation to continue running their workshop comfortably throughout the winter.
